ince
its foundation in the late 1970s the staff of Muckross Research
Library have actively collected material of mainly local Kerry
interest. The Library now houses collections of books, documents,
maps, photographs, sound recordings, video recordings, posters
and other tourist ephemera. This is not a lending library, nor
is it a centre for genealogical research.
At
Muckross Research Library we practice a policy of Preventative
Conservation. Our collections are stored and protected, to the
best of our ability against light, temperature, humidity, pollution
and pests. The library received a Museum of the Year Award for
Best Collections Care, in 2001.
We are continually seeking information and material relating
to the former owners and tenants of the Muckross Estate. Unfortunately,
very little documentation relating to the former estate has survived
on site. Please contact
us if you have any information that you feel might be of interest
to us.
The
Muckross Newsletter is published twice a year and is distributed
free of charge to all schools and libraries within the County.
It is also distributed to tourist outlets and is available to
the general public.
Muckross
Research Library also supports our main educational event
for
primary school children, Féile
Chultúir Chiarraí (Festival of Kerry Culture).
This annual event celebrates the traditional crafts, skills
and
folklife of County Kerry and is hosted by Muckross
Traditional Farms. Féile Chultúir Chiarraí was
awarded a
Sandford Award by the UK
based Heritage Education Trust in 2003 and 2008.
The
Library is open from 9.30am - 5pm from Monday to Friday (except
for Christmas Week). Access is by appointment
only and upon completion of
a
Research Application Form. You may download
the form here. Readers should specify their area of interest
when completing this form.
