Mucros Conservation Bookbinding
uilt
from scratch in 2000, Mucros Conservation Bookbinding Workshop
houses the business which had been carried out in the basement
of Muckross House for the previous 20 years.
The
custom-built unit provides a light filled space for the equipment,
materials and workbenches of the binders and allows the customer
room to view the ongoing projects.
High
class book repairs and conservation are the mainstay of our workload.
A separate lab for paper conservation is continually in use, as
are the specialist sinks, drying racks, light table and solvent
venting unit.
Early
printed books, leather and vellum volumes, manuscripts, maps and
handwritten documents are safely housed in acid free boxes awaiting
attention.
Drawing
on experience gained over 25 years in the bookbinding trade, both
in Ireland and abroad and continuing our policy of employing specialists
in book and paper conservation from many countries, our staff
keep up to date with current trends and thinking in this ever
evolving field. Traditional bookbinding skills passed down through
generations, are utilised with modern archival/acid free/conservation
materials.
Over
the past 20 years, we have undertaken projects for libraries,
museums, book collectors, private commissions, antiquarian trade
and the book publishing industry. However, the ongoing flow of
jobs from the general public, received on a word of mouth basis,
is the backbone of our workload and provides us with the variety
and challenge we enjoy.
